The Generic name for Claritin is Loratadine.
Claritin (loratadine) is an antihistamine used for the relief of symptoms caused by seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and for the treatment of skin hives and itching for people with chronic skin reactions.
Claritin’s antihistamine properties work by reducing/blocking the natural histamine chemical level in the body which produces the rhinitis/hay fever symptoms. Claritin then starts working to decrease your allergy symptoms quickly and effectively. Histamine in your body produces symptoms such as itching, runny nose, watery red eyes, sore throat, sneezing and more.

Adults and Children 12 Years and OlderRecommended dosage is 10mg once a day.
Take this medication as it directed by your doctor. Do not take larger amounts of Claritin.
Claritin Tablet form:
Take Claritin once a day. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew or break tablet.
Disintegrating Claritin Tablet:
Take Claritin once a day.
Take tablet on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before you eat or 2 hours after a meal. Please follow the instructions below on how to take the disintegrating tablet.
- Keep the tablet in the blister pack until it is time to take the medication.
- Open the packet by peeling back the foil. Do Not push the tablet through the foil as you may damage the tablet.
- With dry hands, take the tablets and put it in your mouth, allowing it to dissolve. Do not swallow the tablet whole and do not chew, just let it dissolve
- Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. You may drink liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet.
Store Claritin at room temperature and keep away from moisture and heat.
Missed Dosage
If you miss a dose of Claritin, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is about time for your next dose, do not take the missed dose and just continue on your regular scheduled time. Do not take extra Claritin to make up for the dose missed.What to avoid when taking Claritin
Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity while you are using Claritin.Side effects of Claritin
While taking Claritin, you may suffer some mild common side effects. These should pass once your body is used to the medication. If not, contact your doctor. The side effects you may experience are:- Headache
- Feeling drowsy, tired
- Nervousness
- Dry mouth, sore throat
- Skin Rash
- Stomach pain and diarrhea
- Blurred vision or eye redness
- Nosebleeds
Get emergency medical help if these signs of allergic reactions occur:
hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop taking Claritin and call your doctor if you have any of these serious side effects:
- fast, pounding, uneven, skipping heartbeat
- feel like you will pass out
- Seizure convulsions
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
Not recommended for people who
Claritin is not recommended for people who are allergic to loratadine or desloratadine. Before taking Claritin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs or if you have:
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- Phenylketonuria (PKU)
This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant or are breast feeding, talk to your doctor before taking Claritin. Do not give this medication to a child younger than 6 years of age without talking to your doctor first.
