Periactin (Cyproheptadine) is an antihistamine that blocks the effect of the naturally occurring chemical in your body, histamine. It is used to relieve symptoms of sneezing, itching, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, rashes and other allergy symptoms of the common cold and hay fever allergies.

Recommended Doses

Take this medication as it directed by your doctor. Do not take larger amounts than directed

Adults:
The recommended starting dosage is 4mg (1 tablet) 3 times daily.
Maximum total daily dosage Periactin you should take is 32 mg.

Children 7 to 14 Years:
The recommended starting dosage is 4mg (1 tablet) 2 or 3 times a day.
Maximum total daily dosage for a child this age is 12 mg.

Children 2 to 6 Years:
The recommended starting dosage is 2mg (one-half tablet) 2 or 3 times a day.
Maximum total daily dosage for a child this age is 16 mg.

To take Periactin:

It may take a few days of using Periactin before your symptoms improve. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after a week of treatment.

Store Periactin at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.

Missed Dosage

Take Periactin as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is nearly time for your next dose, do not take the missed dose but go back to your regular scheduled time. Do not take an extra dose of Periactin to make up the missed dose.

What to avoid when taking Periactin

Take caution when driving, performing hazardous activities or operating machinery when taking Periactin, as it may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience these side effects, avoid these activities. Take caution when drinking Alcohol and use it cautiously as it also may increase drowsiness and dizziness.

Side effects of Periactin:

While taking Periactin, you may suffer some mild side effects. This is not a complete list of side effects. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect.

Not recommended for people who

Do not take Periactin if you have taken a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI), which includes Marplan, Nardil or Parnate, in the last 14 days. A very dangerous interaction could occur, leading to serious side effects.

Before taking Periactin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to Cyproheptadine, any form of drugs or if you have:

It is likely you will not be able to take Periactin, or you may require a lower dose and special monitoring during the treatment if you have any conditions mentioned above.

This medication is unlikely to affect and harm an unborn baby. Do not start to take Periactin without first consulting your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Periactin does pass into breast milk. It is known that infants are especially sensitive to the effects of antihistamines; therefore serious side effects could become present in a nursing baby.

It is not recommended to take Periactin if you are breast feeding a baby.
If you are 60 years of age and taking Periactin, you may require a lower dose as you will be more likely to experience side effects.
