The Generic name for Singulair is Montelukast.

Singulair (Montelukast) is a leukotriene inhibitor which helps to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children as young as 12 months. It works by relaxing your airway muscles and blocks the leukotriene chemicals from causing an asthma attack.

Leukotriene is a chemical in your body which get releases when you breathe in an allergen like pollen or dander. The chemical causes swelling in your lungs and tightening of your airway muscles, causing you to have an asthma attack.

Singulair is also used in relieving a runny nose, sneezing and other cold and allergy symptoms in adults and children as young as 6 months. Also it is used to prevent exercised-induced bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the air passages in the lungs) in people who are not taking Singulair for other conditions.
If you are taking this medication to prevent asthma or allergy symptoms, do not use it for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
