The Generic name for Zyrtec is Cetirizine.

Zyrtec (Cetirizine) is an antihistamine that blocks the effect of the naturally occurring chemical in your body, histamine. It is used for relieving symptoms of sneezing, itching, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, rashes and other allergy symptoms of the common cold and hay fever allergies. It is also used to treat itching and swelling caused by chronic urticaria, also known as hives.

Recommended Dose:

Take this medication as it directed by your doctor. Do not take larger amounts than directed

Adults and Children 12 Years and Older:
One 10mg tablet every 12 hours. Do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours.
A 5mg product may be appropriate for less severe symptoms.

To take Zyrtec:

Store Zyrtec at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.

Missed Dosage

Take Zyrtec as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is nearly time for your next dose, do not take the missed dose but go back to your regular scheduled time. Do not take an extra dose of Zyrtec to make up the missed dose.

What to avoid when taking Zyrtec

Tell your doctor if you use other medications that make you sleepy such as: other cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression, or anxiety.
Zyrtec can cause side effects that may impair your thinking and reactions. Be careful when driving or do anything that requires you to be alert and awake.
Avoid drinking alcohol as it can increase the side effects.

Side effects of Zyrtec:

While taking Zyrtec, you may suffer some mild side effects. This is not a complete list of side effects. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect. Below are very uncommon side effects which people generally do not experience

hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop taking Zyrtec and contact your doctor if you have any of these side effects:

Before using Zyrtec, tell your doctor if you are allergic to Cetirizine or are taking any of the following drugs or have: This medication is not expected to affect or be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not start to take Zyrtec without first consulting your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Zyrtec can pass into breast milk and can harm a nursing baby. Do not take Zyrtec if breastfeeding your baby without talking to your doctor about the safety of Zyrtec and breast feeding.
